Starting as a newspaper boy selling the New York Daily News at age 11, Green sold newspapers his whole life. Even in his 60s and 70s, he shouted “Final market! All late, final papers!” to passing Grand Central Station commuters.
In the 1950s, he invented the ground-floor newsstand for high-rise office buildings, and the resulting chain of newsstands was a multimillion-dollar operation. He sold his operation in 1976, but worked for the new company, managing the stands, for 10 more years. “In his own mind, he was always that 10-year-old kid selling newspapers,” said his son Michael. He died February 23 in Manhattan at 91.
