Hulman took over as chairman of the board of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway when her husband, Tony, died in 1977. Mr. Hulman had turned the raceway into the center of motor racing in the U.S., and Mrs. Hulman carried on the tradition Tony started — crying out, “Gentlemen, start your engines!” at the start of each race — until her death on April 10 at 93.
