(Reading Time: < 1 minute)

An actress since 1927, Hickson, who studied at Britain’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, appeared in more than 80 movies and numerous plays. After Hickson appeared in the play Appointment with Death, mystery writer Agatha Christie wrote to say she hoped Hickson would one day play Miss Marple.

Nearly 50 years later, at age 78, Hickson was indeed cast as Miss Marple for a BBC series that was shown in at least 30 countries. Her successful portrayal of the grandmotherly crimesolver brought her international fame. Hickson died October 17 in London at age 92.
