A best-selling author, his social history trilogy of The Proper Bostonians, The Last Resorts, and Who Killed Society? are considered classics. But he is better known recently for a trio of books inspired by “Polar Bear”, a snow-white cat he found on the streets of New York City one Christmas Eve: The Cat Who Came for Christmas, which was a bestseller, The Cat and the Curmudgeon, and The Best Cat Ever.
Amory started his career as the youngest editor ever of The Saturday Evening Post, and later did radio commentary as the “Curmudgeon at Large”. Amory, who died October 14 at age 81, will be buried next to Polar Bear at Black Beauty Ranch, a 1,000 acre sanctuary he founded for abused animals — his lifelong cause.
