In 1988, Janeway, an immunologist, founded the Section of Immunobiology at the Yale University School of Medicine. He also wrote the classic text on the subject, Immunobiology: The Immune System in Health and Disease, which is still in use. Janeway studied “innate immunity,” the body’s natural defense against infection, and how “T cells” ward off disease. Dr. Janeway died April 12 from cancer. He was 60.
