A commercial photographer, Manley is best known for his photos of Arizona, which were published from the mid-1940s to the late 1980s in Arizona Highways magazine.
“He had a natural talent for composition,” said his business partner, Naurice Koonce, and “for getting the right light.” His photos were so iconic of Arizona they brought the magazine significant attention — which translated to a significant increase in Arizona tourism.
His favorite part of the state: Monument Valley — Navajo land with a spectacular landscape. In addition to Arizona Highways magazine, his work appeared in Life, Look, National Geographic, Popular Science, Saturday Evening Post, and scores of books. He was paralyzed on his right side from a stroke in 1997, and died at home July 15. He was 84.
