Composer and actorBobby Troup

(Reading Time: < 1 minute)

A musician and actor, Troup entertained several generations. His 1946 song “Route 66” captured the public’s imagination about the road that facilitated the U.S.’s westward migration. In the 1950s, he was the host of Stars of Jazz on TV, and played Tommy Dorsey in the movie The Gene Krupa Story.

His bit part in the original M*A*S*H movie as Sgt. Gorman summed up the movie’s feelings about the military with his signature line, “god-damned Army!” And in the 1970s, he played Dr. Joe Early, the level-headed doctor who remotely controlled paramedics Johnny and Roy on the Emergency! TV series. Troup died February 7 at age 80.
