Tie-in novelist

Ann Crispin

A science fiction writer, Crispin was known for writing “tie-in” novelizations of movies or TV series: she wrote the novelization for the 1983 miniseries “V” (and a couple of follow-ons), several Star Trek novels, three Star Wars novels, and more. In such novelizations, the author can delve into much more detail about the characters; Crispin brought rich detail to the background of Trek’s “Mr. Spock” as well as “Capt. Jack Sparrow” in the book Pirates of the Caribbean: The Price of Freedom. “Ann was particularly good at capturing the voice of the characters,” said Keith R.A. DeCandido, a fellow tie-in writer. “She was really good at digging into the characters and knowing what made them tick. She had a very strong understanding of these popular characters.” She made up her own characters and novel series, StarBridge. But she didn’t just sit at home and write novels: she was the Vice President of the Science Fiction Writers of America, and co-founded Writer Beware, which helps aspiring writers avoid scams and rogue agents, and helped investigators to bring charges against scammers. “A.C.” Crispin posted a farewell to a Star Trek forum on September 3, “I want to thank you all for your good wishes and prayers. I fear my condition is deteriorating. I am doing the best I can to be positive but I probably don't have an awful lot of time left.” She was correct: she died September 6, from bladder cancer. She was 63.
